Gardening & Garden Design FAQ

Gardening Questions

Unfortunately it is usually not possible for me to do a one-off gardening job. If it is out of season it may be possible, so if you’re reading this between November and February then get in touch.

Once every two weeks is the minimum for smaller gardens I am able to provide. This is because during the growing season plants and grass grows very fast.

I would recommend speaking to me before the end of February as I have very limited spots available for new gardens.

I am very open about my rates and currently I charge £25 per hour for gardening services. There is a minimum of a 2 hour booking.

Due to the need to travel between sites I can only provide gardening service in East Yorkshire with a focus on Cottingham.

Garden Design Questions

Yes, I will be able to do a free initial consultation on a garden design project. You would need to be able to provide some photos and your ideas beforehand. You would also need to be in East Yorkshire or nearby.

This is one of the most common questions we are asked and one of the most difficult to answer before we have done any design work and agreed the scope of the work.

Gardens are more costly than many people realise – often because garden TV makeover programmes create totally unrealistic expectations (by not including labour, which is the most expensive element) Most gardens that appear on the BBC programme ‘Garden Rescue’, for example would cost approximately 10x the budget figures that are quoted once labour cost has been included. In reality the minimum cost would be £100 per sq. metre or some say you should spend around 10% of your property value.

The main steps are:

  1. Garden design briefing – free initial consultation followed by costed proposal
  2. Site Survey and Analysis
  3. Concept Design
  4. Detailed design
  5. Tender
  6. Construction
  7. Planting Design
  8. Aftercare

You would need to hire landscapers for hardscaping and some of the larger work. I will be on-site for planting, overseeing building and as much of the build as you need me to be.

Definitely not! Whether a large country gardens or small residential gardens there is a design for you. Even cafes and care home gardens benefit greatly from a good design. The point of good garden design is to make the most of the space you have available, which works from a practical point of view and is also a beautiful space that you can enjoy for many years to come.

This depends on the size of the project but even a small design may take a few months to complete and a lot depends on the other parties involved (such as landscapers, electricians, builders, etc.).

Yes, generally these will be bought through trusted nurseries and is often at a lower cost than a garden centre.

Of course! Although it is usual for the plants used in your garden to be young plants as this reduces the cost to you significantly and also the plants have a better chance of growing well. By the time the next spring and summer comes your garden plants will be looking amazing!

The design process and build is separate from the maintenance. If you are a keen gardener you may want to do this yourself but any garden designed has the option for regular maintenance at a hourly rate.

What garden services do you provide?

General tidying of your garden and cutting the lawn and feeding can be arranged as a regular job. This can also include creating new beds, pruning and hedge cutting.

You can get a basic garden consultation and review which will give you ideas to do yourself or you can go the whole way and get me to design and arrange a full garden makeover.

I can source new plants, shrubs or trees to put into your garden. I can even do the planting for you and ensure they get the very best start to life!

Whether you have questions about what plants to use in your garden or you need help designing an area of your garden or the full space then get in touch. I can help you by offering a quick garden overview with ideas to sitting down and planning with you over a few weeks (or months) a totally new garden that will have everyone talking about it!

I also have a background in tech and I can help you set up and configure automatic watering systems, automated lawn care and use tech to make your garden look better but most importantly it can reduce the maintenance and save you time and money in the long-term.
